Chair’s Message – March 2016

The IEEE Long Island Section has been one of the most active Sections in the IEEE. The Section’s calendar posted on the website illustrates Section’s heavy involvement in conferences, workshops, seminars, meetings and student activities. This year we started offering workshops on the state-of-the-art technological topics, which have already received a warm welcome from the members, as well as concerned bodies. The first workshop is on Linux based embedded systems design scheduled on February 29 – March 09. Other workshops on current hot topics will be offered soon. Please attend the workshops to enrich your knowledge as well as support the activities of the Section. Also, if you know anyone who is willing to offer similar workshops, please contact the Executive Committee.

Another successful event was the Engineers Week Seminar Series held on February 11 at the Holiday Inn in Plainview. The sincere effort and hard work of the organizers, including William Wilkes, in bringing together a great group of speakers on different attractive topics are highly appreciated.

It is my privilege to welcome you and your guests to the Annual Awards Banquet to be held on March 31 at the Fox Hollow in Woodbury. We are honored to have Ms. Donna Linke-Klein, of BAE Systems Greenlawn site, as the Keynote Speaker, who will speak on “Innovator’s DNA”. At the banquet, we will recognize the significant contributions of our volunteers who have made the Section a successful entity. Please join us to also honor six IEEE Region 1 awardees and nine IEEE Long Island Section awardees. A special citation will be awarded to the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclysse.

The Section has also been actively involved in organizing conferences in the area. The major conference supported by the Section is the Long Island Systems, Applications and Technology (LISAT) which will be held on April 29 at Farmingdale State College. It is the twelfth conference which will bring together scholars from both academia and industry. In addition to invited and technical presentations, there will be vendors showcasing their technological developments. Hope you will manage to find time to attend this great event.

There are a couple of other conferences, where the Section is providing technical support, including the thirteenth International Conference and Expo on Emerging Technologies (CEWIT) to be held on November 02 – 03.

The Section would like to hear from you on how to make the Section effective and worthy to its members. Please share your comment and recommendation with us by sending them to chair@iee.li.

Looking forward to seeing your active role at different meetings and activities.

Thanking you,

M. Nazrul Islam, PhD
