Workshop: IEEE 485-2020  Sizing Lead-Acid Batteries for complex load profiles

This presentation will include instruction on how to perform this by hand using the Rt method. This would allow the participant to see exactly how they can create their own load profile, and then prove their cell selection.

The course uses printed material, paper, pencil, and calculator and does not use any computer programs.  We endorse no particular battery.  This technique will work for any typical storage battery such as VLA, VRLA and may be transferred for use with IEEE std 1115 for Nicad batteries and other similar standards.

Materials related to this calculation will be provided, however we are not providing an actual copy of the standard itself.  While we recommend having a copy, it is not necessary for this lecture. As a participant, you may elect to bring your own battery literature, tables, plus load profiles you want to prove. We will provide some sample battery discharge tables.

The IEEE is arranging to provide related credit as desired for practicing PEs and students.

3 Professional Development Hours (PDH) Opportunity

Battery History (10:30am – 12pm) 1.5 PDH

Take a step back in time and learn about the beginnings of batteries. Take a journey through the first uses in the 1700’s with the Leydon Jar in the “Kissing Game” and see the evolution to the uses in electric cars.  This is a light‐hearted fun course to see where it all began!

Battery Sizing (1pm -3:30pm) 1.5 PDH

Using the IEEE Standard 485, this course will teach you the proper techniques for sizing lead acid batteries for utility applications.  You will get a basic understanding of the chemistry of lead acid and Nicad batteries as well as the step-by-step guide to sizing using complex load profile techniques. This is a hands-on course that only involves paper, pencils, and calculators, not a computer program! You will learn the methods create a proper load profile and solve for the correct battery.  Printed materials will be provided for students use, in learning this technique.
